ABERDEEN, Md. – The Swarthmore College baseball team got the 2024 campaign underway on Friday with a pair of victories at Ripken Stadium. The Garnet defeated Montclair State University, 17-7, before coming out on top versus Mount Aloysius College, 9-1.
The Garnet batted .337 over the two contests.
Max Roffwarg hit .500 with four hits and a 1.261 OPS on the day.
Aidan Sullivan,
Jett Shue, and
Matthew Silvestre all drove in five runs with multiple hits. Silvestre blasted the first home run of the season.
On the mound, Swarthmore received an impressive outing from
Noah Potholm in the nightcap. He surrendered just one run and two hits over seven innings while tying his career high with nine strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Montclair State)
- The Garnet got on the board in the opening frame on an RBI single by
Benjamin Buchman. The Red Hawks countered with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning to tie it up.
- Swarthmore pushed across three runs in the second, all with two outs, to go back in front.

Jett Shue knocked a run in with a base hit.
Joe Radek made the score 5-1 with an RBI single in the third.
- Montclair State battled back and scored five runs in the bottom of the third to take its first lead of the afternoon. The score remained 6-5 until the sixth, when the Garnet began a string of three consecutive four-run innings. Sullivan doubled in two more runs, before scoring on a passed ball, and
Matthew Silvestre plated Shue with a base knock.
- In the seventh, Swarthmore scored four runs on just one hit to increase the advantage to seven (13-6). Shue and
Sam Marco both hit a two-run single in the eighth to end the Garnet scoring. The Red Hawks' final run came on an error in the eighth.

- The Mounties struck first in the opening frame with a two-out RBI single. The Garnet tied the score in the first then took the lead with a pair of runs in the second.
Alex Glasscock recorded a sacrifice fly and Roffwarg singled in a run.
- Radek made the score 3-1 with his RBI single in the third. Swarthmore padded the lead with three runs in the fourth. Shue drove in Roffwarg with a base hit to center before Silvestre launched a two-run shot over the wall in left.
- The Garnet tallied one run each in the sixth and seventh innings to close the scoring.
