ABERDEEN, Md. – The Swarthmore College baseball team dropped the final game of its opening weekend, 9-4, to Keene State College on Saturday.
The Owls took a 4-0 lead in the third before the Garnet chipped away and tied it up in the sixth. However, Keene State scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to regain the upper hand and led the rest of the way.
Matthew Silvestre went 2-for-4 on the day for Swarthmore, including a double.
Jett Shue knocked in a pair of runs.
Joshua Rankey had a tough-luck start, allowing just two hits over three innings of work but surrendering four unearned runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Owls put up a four-run inning in the third to break the ice. Keene State scored on a groundout, a two-run double, and an RBI single.
- Shue put the Garnet on the board in the fourth with a sacrifice fly. In the fifth,
Max Roffwarg singled in
Kaiden Rosenbaum and Shue drew a bases-loaded walk to get Swarthmore within one (4-3).

Benjamin Buchman led off the top of the sixth with a walk and later scored on a balk to even the score at four apiece. However, the Owls responded with a three-run frame via a sacrifice fly and a two-run single to take a 7-4 advantage. Keene State tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth and the Garnet were unable to get a runner in scoring position over their final three at-bats.
