Women's Basketball Battles at Johns Hopkins But Falls in Regular Season Finale

BALTIMORE – The Swarthmore College women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a 71-57 loss at No. 12 Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet closed the conference slate with a 10-10 record.

With Saturday's results around the Centennial Conference, the Garnet are the sixth seed for next week's conference tournament and will travel to Dickinson College on Tuesday for the opening round.

Dana Bandurick led the Swarthmore offense with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Alyssa Hayashi and Carly Murphy both scored in double figures, totaling 12 and 10 points respectively. The Garnet posted a higher shooting percentage than the Blue Jays, but Johns Hopkins downed 13 three-pointers and won the battle on the glass to earn the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Jays opened the game with five points then Swarthmore answered with eight of the next 11 to tie it up at eight with 5:15 to go in the opening quarter. The Garnet shot 4-of-7 while limiting Johns Hopkins to 1-for-5 from the floor with two turnovers during the 8-3 stretch. The Blue Jays scored four of the last six in the period to take a 12-10 edge into the second.

- It was a tight second quarter as the two sides traded the lead several times. Bandurick netted seven of her 15 points during the frame as Swarthmore went 6-for-11 on field goals. Katelyn Becker, Hayashi, and Murphy all hit a three in the period. Johns Hopkins was just 5-for-20 shooting, but four of the Blue Jays' makes were from beyond the arc and the teams were even at 28 at halftime.

- Johns Hopkins started the third strong, putting up the first 10 points over a three-minute span to take a 38-28 advantage. The difference was still 10 (45-35) at the 4:16 mark before the Garnet rallied with nine of the next 10 points to get within two (46-44) with 2:20 remaining. Swarthmore was a perfect 4-for-4 during the run with Murphy pouring in five points, including a three-pointer. It was a three-point game (49-46) heading into the fourth.

- The Blue Jays bounced back in a big way in the final quarter, tallying the first 11 points and 14 of 15 to take a commanding 63-47 lead with 5:13 to go. The Garnet got back in it with an 8-2 stretch to trail by 10 (65-55) at the 2:16 mark but Swarthmore made just one basket the rest of the way.
