CARLISLE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's basketball team had the ball down two in the final 30 seconds but the Garnet's season came to an unfortunate end with a 46-42 loss at Dickinson College in the first round of the Centennial Conference Tournament on Tuesday night.
Swarthmore trailed by as many as 14 and the Garnet were behind by 11 with five minutes to play but they rallied to get within one possession with 1:06 remaining. The Red Devils turned the ball over and Swarthmore had the opportunity to tie. However, the Garnet missed two shots in the paint and were forced to foul. Swarthmore got another chance when Dickinson missed both free throws, but the Garnet turned the ball over and the Red Devils were able to secure the win at the line.
Alyssa Hayashi paced Swarthmore with eight points and nine rebounds.
Katelyn Becker chipped in with seven points while
Dana Bandurick and
Carly Murphy added six apiece. Bandurick also had seven boards. The Garnet end the campaign with a 12-14 record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore got out to an early 4-0 lead on a
Neve Yair three-pointer and a free throw by
Emily Smith. However, Dickinson then took over with an 18-0 run, including the last 15 points of the first quarter, to lead 18-4 with 9:00 to go in the second. The Red Devils drilled four three-pointers during the surge.
- The Garnet found a rhythm in the second quarter, netting 12 of 17 to close the gap to seven (23-16) with 2:46 on the clock. Swarthmore shot 5-of-7 during the stretch with
Anna Hansson, Hayashi, and Murphy each tallying four points. The difference remained seven (26-19) at halftime.
- Dickinson opened the second half with a three but Swarthmore came back with seven of the next nine to cut the deficit to five (31-26) with 3:52 to go in the third. The Garnet held the Red Devils to just 1-of-6 shooting with two turnovers during the sequence. However, Dickinson responded with a 7-2 run of its own to end the frame and take a 38-28 advantage into the final period.
- In the fourth, the Red Devils sank a three to up their lead to 11 (44-33) with 5:13 left. Swarthmore then rallied for nine consecutive points to get within two (44-42) at the 1:06 mark, setting up the final moments. Becker led the way with five points and hit a three along with
Elisa Fiore.
