Mullan Selected to the 2025 ITA Men’s Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame

TEMPE, ARIZ - Former Swarthmore College men's tennis coach Michael Mullan was selected as a member of the 2025 ITA Men's Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame induction class, announced by the organization on Tuesday afternoon.

Serving as the college's head men's tennis coach for 40 seasons, Mullan retired as one of the winningest coaches in collegiate tennis history, with 441 career victories, 27 NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances and three national titles.

"The statistics that summarize Mike's 40 years leading Swarthmore to be one of the most successful programs in Division III history are insufficient to capture the hundreds of deep relationships he formed with the individuals he coached," said head men's tennis coach Jason Box and men's tennis alum Mark Fallati '18 in a joint statement.

"To this day, former players across the decades will tell you he has shaped their futures - and even that is a subset of the students, coaches, and teachers he touched as a dedicated professor and athletic department leader. His contributions went far beyond campus as he played a crucial role shaping the foundations and growth of D3 tennis, and established a standard of sustained prominence combined with unwavering sportsmanship. Trusted and beloved by so many, Mike is deeply deserving of this honor for his passionate service to Swarthmore, to the college tennis community, and to the highest ideals of sport as lifelong education."

Mullan retired from coaching after 40 years in 2018. He began coaching the Garnet in 1978 and immediately led Swarthmore to seven-straight Middle Atlantic Conference titles. Three years after taking over for the Garnet, the legendary coach captured his first of his three NCAA Division III Championships in 1981, followed by the second in 1985 and the third in 1990.

At the helm of the men's tennis program, Mullan's statistics and accolades speak for themselves. The Delaware County native led the Garnet to three national titles, seven MASCAC Championships, coached the 1985 NCAA Division III National Doubles Champions and  produced 39 All-America selections.

Mullan was named the NCAA Division III Coach of the Year in 1986. He was later inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Delco Chapter and the Swarthmore Athletics Hall of Fame.

A graduate of Springfield High School, Mullan won two Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state high school championships and went on to play at the University of California, Berkeley under famed tennis coach Dr. Chet Murphy. Mullan also taught in the Sociology Department during his career at Swarthmore College. He holds Ph.D.s in sociology and history from Delaware and Temple.

Featuring Division III inductees, the Class of 2025 will also celebrate Bob Hansen, Eric Butorac and Bud Schultz.

The Men's Hall of Fame Class of 2025 induction ceremony will be hosted at Gustavus Adolphus College preceding the ITA Division III Men's National Team Indoor Championships on February 20, 2025. The Swarthmore College men's tennis team will compete in the indoor championships for the first time in program history.

The ITA Men's Hall of Fame inducted its first class in 1983 and since, has inducted more than 270 players, coaches, and contributors. Players are eligible for election to the Hall of Fame 10 years after the conclusion of their participation on the team and once they are no longer playing on the pro tour. Coaches are eligible immediately following retirement. The main criteria for election includes college accomplishments and honors earned after college.
