Women’s Basketball Falls Short Against MIT, Becker Posts Career-Best Performance

NEW YORK - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team was unable to overcome a third-quarter deficit as they fell to MIT, 56-48, in their opening weekend finale on Saturday.

The Garnet kept pace with the Engineers as they trailed by four points at the half. However, MIT put Swarthmore away with a commanding 19-9 advantage in the third quarter. The Garnet kept fighting with a 21-15 edge in the final stanza, but were unable to overcome a slow start to the second half.

Katelyn Becker was excellent for the Garnet with a career-high 20 points, while shooting 4-for-5 from three-point range and 8-for-8 from the foul line. She stuffed the stat sheet with five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a whopping seven steals in 28 minutes of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Engineers jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opening five minutes of the first quarter. Vanessa Amsinger provided momentum for the Garnet with a three-pointer for the team's first field goal. The Garnet then closed the stanza with a 6-0 stretch in the final two minutes to tie the game. Norah Wingfield, Anna Hansson and Alyssa Hayashi all scored in the paint to facilitate the run, 10-10.

- Hansson cashed in a pair of free throws to give the Garnet their first lead until the Engineers connected from long range to get back in front. Later in the second, MIT gained separation with an 8-0 run. Becker then came through for her team with a pair of three-pointers to trim the team's deficit to two points. The Engineers added a bucket in the final minute to take a four-point lead into intermission.

- The Engineers opened the second half with a triple, but Becker answered right back with a three ball of her own. The senior connected on her first three triples of the game to help keep the Garnet within striking distance, 25-21.

- Later in the third quarter, MIT took control on a 6-2 run with all their points coming off free throws. The Engineers then went ahead by double-digits with a three-pointer and a driving layup on consecutive possessions, 38-27. Swarthmore was outscored by seven points in the final five minutes as MIT carried a 14-point advantage into the final stanza, 41-27.

- The Engineers continued to build their lead with a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter. Hayashi then answered with a much-needed bucket, while a pair of Becker free throws and a Hansson free throw trimmed Swarthmore's deficit to 11 points with 7:13 left.

- Moments later, Swarthmore shrunk its deficit to single digits with a Hayashi three-pointer at the 5:23 mark. Hansson then crept her team within seven points with a driving layup.

- In the final minute of play, Becker connected from long range one final time for her career-best fourth triple of the contest. However, the Garnet were unable to crawl back from their third-quarter deficit, despite a valiant effort in the final quarter.
