Women’s Basketball Uses Fourth-Quarter Rally to Outlast Widener, 59-53

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team captured its first victory of the season with a complete team effort over Widener University, 59-53, on Wednesday.

The Garnet showed perseverance as they used a big fourth-quarter rally to put away a dangerous Widener squad. Swarthmore went on a 16-2 run early in the final stanza to erase a four-point deficit and blow past the visiting Pride.

Alyssa Hayashi led the Garnet with 14 points, five assists and four steals. Anna Hansson contributed her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four assists and three blocks.

Norah Wingfield also tallied 10 points, which included eight third-quarter points to help carry the Garnet through a challenging stretch offensively. Rookie standout Rebekah Gendler had a breakout performance with nine points, three steals and two blocks in 20-minutes of action. She tallied six of the team's points with a three-pointer and an and-one layup during their crucial fourth-quarter run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet got off to a quick start with a 9-3 run to open the game. Hansson and Carly Murphy scored in the paint to kick off the scoring. Gendler then capped off the run with a three ball with 3:34 left.

- Widener trimmed its deficit to three points until a last-second, three-pointer from Raven Richardson gave the Garnet a six-point lead at the first intermission, 14-8.

- The Pride opened the second quarter with a 6-2 run to pull within a point. Swarthmore then rallied for seven-unanswered points to take a half-high, eight-point lead. Hayashi started the run with back-to-back layups - including an and-one bucket. Murphy then cashed in consecutive free throws to take a 23-15 lead at the 5:57 mark.

- Widener tightened things up with a late first-half run. The Pride scored seven-straight to pull within a point, before connecting on a three-ball to take its first lead of the game. Swarthmore then tied things up with another Richardson bucket as time expired, 26-26.

- The Pride took control early in the second half with a pair of threes to take a six-point lead with 7:26 left. Wingfield then drained a foul-line jumper out of Swarthmore's timeout to give the team its first bucket of the quarter, 32-28.

- Vanessa Amsinger cut the team's deficit to three points with a three-pointer from the wing at the 1:23 mark. Wingfield then drained her fourth bucket of the quarter with a foul-line jumper to trim the team's deficit to two points. The senior tallied eight points in the quarter to pace the Garnet offense.
