Women’s Basketball Drops Back-and-Forth Opener to Babson

NEW YORK - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team dropped a back-and-forth showdown against Babson College, 52-47, to open the 2024-25 campaign at the NYU Scholars Classic on Friday.

The game featured four ties and 11 lead changes with neither team leading by more than seven points.

Eight different players scored for the Garnet in a well-rounded performance. Anna Hansson led the way with 10 points and a team-high five rebounds. Lillian Czub also impressed in her collegiate debut with nine points, while shooting a perfect 2-for-2 from the field and 5-for-5 from the foul line.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Katelyn Becker opened the scoring with a foul line jumper for the team's first bucket of the season. After five-unanswered points for Babson, Czub cooled off the Beavers with a pair of free throws for her first-collegiate bucket. Babson rallied for a 6-2 run to end the opening stanza, 11-6.

- Jasmine Branda knocked down a corner three for her first collegiate bucket after Carolina Lopez fought for an offensive rebound. Babson then answered with a triple of its own, before Alyssa Hayashi and Hansson added back-to-back buckets to pull within one.

- Later in the second, Hansson put Swarthmore ahead with a layup after an excellent entry pass from Lopez with 5:29 left. Carly Murphy then connected from long range to put Swarthmore ahead by four points, but the Beavers battled back to tie the game in the final minute of the half. Vanessa Amsinger responded quickly with a go-ahead triple until Babson tied the game with a three before the buzzer, 21-21.

- Hansson helped put an end to a 5-0 Babson run with back-to-back layups to put the Garnet back ahead in the third quarter. Lopez assisted both buckets for her second and third assists of the contest, 27-26.

- Later in the third quarter, the Beavers regained the lead with four-straight points. Becker then put the Garnet back ahead after cashing in on an offensive rebound with 4:32 left in the stanza. The teams continued to exchange leads with Czub connecting on a floating, and-one layup to give the Garnet a two-point edge and Babson immediately countering with a go-ahead three, 35-34.

- Swarthmore rattled off six-unanswered points to take a three-point lead with 6:54 remaining in regulation. Norah Wingfield, Hansson and Czub each added buckets to spearhead the game's tenth lead change.

- Babson held the Garnet without a field goal for five minutes as they built a three-point lead heading into the final minute. After battling for another offensive board, Wingfield drained a turnaround jumper to put Swarthmore within one point. However, Babson maintained its lead as they shot 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute to ice the game.
