Volleyball Bounces Back With Shutout Versus Washington

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's volleyball team earned its 10th shutout win of the season on Wednesday night, defeating visiting Washington College, 3-0, in a Centennial Conference matchup.
 
The Garnet held the Shorewomen to just a .056 attack percentage in securing the victory. Alexia Enache paced the Swarthmore offense with 10 kills while also tallying five digs and three blocks. Isabel Adam contributed nine kills and three digs. Keira Miles pitched in with eight kills.
 
Emily Sun and Madeline Mountcastle totaled 15 and 13 assists respectively. Mountcastle added 11 digs and three service aces while Sun produced 10 digs. Melissa Eyer chipped in with seven digs and three aces.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Washington scored the first point of the match on a Garnet service error but Swarthmore answered with five straight to take an early 5-1 lead. Miles dropped in two kills and Enache added one. The Shorewomen recorded three points in a row to get within one but the Garnet pulled away again with seven of the next eight to push the margin to seven (12-5). Mountcastle registered a pair of aces while Enache and Angelina Heminway each contributed a kill. Swarthmore cruised the rest of the way, leading by at least five en route to a 25-14 victory. The Garnet posted an impressive .407 hitting percentage in the set.
 
- Washington got out to a 6-2 advantage to start the second set. The Shorewomen clung to an 11-8 edge when Swarthmore rallied for a 6-2 run to take the lead 14-13. Enache, Sun, and Miles all scored a kill and Mountcastle tacked on an ace. After back-to-back points put Washington back on top, the Garnet scored six of eight again to go ahead 20-17. Adam and Zindzhi Montgomery produced two kills apiece. The Shorewomen strung together three points to even the score at 20, but Swarthmore took control for good with a 5-1 stretch to win the set 25-21.
 
- The Garnet carried the momentum into the third frame, jumping out to an 11-2 cushion. Enache tallied two kills and Eyer scored a trio of aces. Swarthmore led by as many as 12 (17-5) but Washington fought back with a 17-6 surge to cut the deficit to one (23-22). However, the Garnet were finally able to put the match away, getting a kill from Miles followed by a Shorewomen error to take the stanza 25-22.
