No. 24 Field Hockey Falls to Haverford in Shootout

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 24 Swarthmore College field hockey team fell to Haverford College, 1-0, in a shootout on Saturday night. The Garnet secured the No. 3 seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament and will host Bryn Mawr in the opening round.

Swarthmore dominated the majority of the game as they held Haverford without a shot for the final 66-minutes of regulation and overtime. The Garnet outshot the Fords 16-3 with an 18-3 advantage in corners. However, despite the lopsided stat sheet, the Fords bested the Garnet 3-2 in the shootout.

Before tonight's contest, the team honored Katherine Kohn, Grace Fuselier, Elizabeth Zack and Sophia Hitchingham for their dedication and contributions to the field hockey program.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Haverford registered the first two shots of the contest, but were unable to get an attempt on goal. The Garnet defense blocked the first attempt and watched the second sail wide. Cassandra Conklin then stepped up and made her only save in the final minute of the quarter to keep the game scoreless. Haverford outshot the Garnet 3-1 in the stanza, but did not attempt a shot for the remainder of the game.

- Kohn registered the team's first shot on goal in the 28th minute. The Garnet then threatened with three corner attempts in the final 30-seconds of play. Hitchingham and Amelia Landry both had strikes saved in the final 10-seconds. The Garnet defense held the Fords without a shot in the second quarter, while their offense fired off six attempts.

- Midway through the third, the Garnet earned a pair of corner attempts, but were unable to put a shot on goal. Magdelana Jordan was credited with the only shot in a quarter dominated by defense.

- Jordan had a couple shots blocked off consecutive corner attempts in the 50th minute. Later in the quarter, the Garnet earned back-to-back corners again, but failed to register a shot. Swarthmore had all four corner attempts of the quarter and held Haverford without a shot for the third-straight quarter.

- Hitchingham and Gabriella Vasquez both had shot attempts saved early in the first overtime. Kohn then fired a shot wide after back-to-back corners in the 69th minute.

- Kohn fired a shot wide early in the second overtime. Hitchingham registered two shots late in the second overtime, but was unable to avoid the shootout. The Fords generated very little offense and did not record a shot in both overtimes.

- Haverford took a 3-2 lead in the shootout. Conklin then stopped the Fords' fourth attempt to keep the Garnet alive, but Swarthmore was unable to sneak its fifth attempt past the goalie.
