Women’s Soccer Drops Competitive Showdown with No. 3 CNU, Handed First Loss of Season

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's soccer suffered its first loss of the season with a 1-0 decision against No. 3 Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon. The Captains have gone 77-straight games without a loss, which increases their Division-III record.

The Captains netted the lone goal in the 47th minute. Ava Gizzie nearly tied the game in the 62nd minute, but had their attempt deflect off the crossbar. Sofie Aird helped keep the Garnet in the game with five saves, but the offense was unable to cash in for a tying score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams battled to a scoreless opening half with the Captains holding an 8-2 shot advantage. Led by the stellar play of Emme Hansard, the Garnet defense was phenomenal in limiting scoring chances and winning possession at midfield against a talented Christopher Newport squad.

- Aird made several key stops to keep the game scoreless. The sophomore recorded her best save early in the half with a diving save to stop a Christopher Neewport strike from outside the box.

- The Garnet attempted two shots in the opening half. Sydney Ross was credited with the team's first attempt in the 32nd minute. The first-year connected with the ball off a corner attempt, but was unable to sneak her shot through heavy traffic. Moments later, Ava Gizzie had their free kick stopped for the team's first shot on goal.

- The Captains broke the scoreless drought with the game's first goal in the 47th minute. Christopher Newport caused a turnover on its attacking side, which broke free an attacker for a one-on-one opportunity. Moments later, Aird prevented further damage with an excellent save in the 48th minute. The sophomore keeper challenged a Captains attacker, who got behind Swarthmore's defense on a centering pass.

- Gizzie nearly tied the game for Swarthmore in the 62nd minute. The sophomore had a good look in front of the net, but had their shot denied by the crossbar. They had another shot on goal in the 82nd minute, but were turned away by the keeper for the final time.
