Women's Soccer Blanks Washington To Lock In Centennial Tournament Bid

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's soccer team secured a Centennial Conference Tournament spot with a 2-0 victory over visiting Washington College on Wednesday night.

Liesel Blau delivered the game's first goal on an Olimpico late in the first half. Sydney Ross then provided the insurance goal in the second period. The Garnet outshot the Shorewomen, 22-14.

Ava Gizzie led the Garnet with five shots and Lila Travers tied her season high with seven saves in goal. While Swarthmore is guaranteed a berth in the conference tournament, the Garnet can still finish anywhere from third to sixth in the Centennial standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first 10 minutes of the game were back-and-forth with strong defense from both the Garnet and Shorewomen.

- With 20 minutes remaining in the half, Gizzie drove a hard shot to goal that was saved but it gave Swarthmore its first corner of the game.

- Blau found the back of the net off her own corner kick in the 41st minute, giving the Garnet a 1-0 lead going into the half.

- Washington started the second half strong, drawing three corners of its own, but the Shorewomen came up empty each time.

- Charlotte Carleton had a one-on-one with the goalie in the 76th minute but her shot was saved, keeping the lead at one.

- After a back-and-forth in front of Washington's goal, Ross found the back of the net to put Swarthmore up 2-0 with just over six minutes to play. Nicole Jensen was awarded her first collegiate point with an assist on the goal.

This season the Swarthmore Women's Soccer team went through a day-long jersey design workshop, facilitated by Goalkeeper and Design FC coach Lila Travers '26. Over the course of the workshop players were asked to reflect on their role in the team both on and off the field, what was most important to them about Swat soccer, and what they think the team identity is. The workshop was a great opportunity for our players to collaborate with each other in a new way, and create a special edition jersey that celebrates the program.

The limited edition Design FC jerseys are available for pre-order here. All proceeds will go towards supporting Design FC programming in Chester.
