No. 24 Field Hockey Drops Back-and-Forth Battle with Washington

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 24 Swarthmore College field hockey team dropped a heart breaker to Washington College, 4-3, on Wednesday night. The Garnet tied the game in the 56th minute, but were unable to force overtime against the Shorewomen.

Gabriella Vasquez scored twice for the Garnet with the team's first and second goals of the evening. Katherine Kohn then tied the game late with an equalizer in the 56th minute until Washington countered with the game-winner in the 57th minute. Kohn moved into the program's top-10 all-time with her 30th career goal.

Amelia Landry played an excellent game at both ends of the field. The junior tallied two defensive saves and was credited with two assists on offense.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet earned a penalty stroke early in the opening stanza. Sarah Cooper took the attempt for Swarthmore, but was denied by an excellent save. Moments later, the Shorewomen added the game's first tally in the fourth minute.

- The Garnet defense withstood a steady Washington attack to limit the damage in the first quarter. Landry made a defensive save at the 10th minute to end a stretch of three-straight Shorewomen corners. Swarthmore tied the score in the 11th minute with a Vasquez score after Landry played her an assist from outside the circle.

- Washington put themselves back in front with a go-ahead score in the 25th minute. The Shorewomen took advantage of their sixth corner attempt of the half as they out-earned the Garnet, 6-2, on penalty corners.

- Late in the third quarter, Vasquez tied the game once more with her second equalizer of the contest. Kayla Fink touched the ball to Vasquez, who reached out and tapped the ball past the goalie, at the front of the cage. Moments later, Cassandra Conklin stepped up to diffuse a Shorewomen scoring chance and preserve the tie game.

- The Shorewomen regained the lead with a goal in the 48th minute. On the hunt for the tying score, Hannah Ulrich fired consecutive shots off a penalty corner, but was turned away with a save and blocked shot. Moments later, Kohn found the back of the cage to tie the game in the 56th minute.

- Washington refused to go away as they answered back with another go-ahead score in the 57th minute. Landry denied the Shorewomen with her second defensive save of the evening, but the Garnet were unable to prevent the ensuing rebound from reaching the back of the cage.
