Women's Soccer Bested By McDaniel on the Road

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel College scored twice early in the second half to take the lead and held off the Swarthmore College women's soccer team the rest of the way as the Garnet fell to the Green Terror, 3-2, on the road on Saturday.

Swarthmore had a 16-11 advantage in shots but McDaniel put nine of its attempts on goal compared to just eight for the Garnet. Swarthmore also had a 10-3 edge in corner kicks but was unable to come away with the victory.

The Green Terror broke the ice with a goal in the 16th minute but Celia Kanellakos found the back of the net for the Garnet and the teams were even at one at halftime. McDaniel started the second period strong with two goals in the first four minutes to go ahead 3-1. Ava Gizzie notched their team-high 10th goal of the campaign to get Swarthmore within one but the Garnet could not find the equalizer over the last 33 minutes of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore came out firing to start the game, recording five shots and three corner kicks within the opening seven minutes. However, the McDaniel keeper made a trio of saves while the other two attempts went wide.

- After missing their first shot wide, the Green Terror scored on a sequence in the 16th minute to go ahead 1-0. McDaniel put a shot on target off a corner kick and Lila Travers came up with a diving save. However, the Green Terror put in the rebound.

- Kanellakos tied it up in the 25th minute when she blasted a shot into the upper left corner from 25 yards out. Travers stopped two shots over the remainder of the half while Swarthmore's only other attempt was saved as well.

- The Green Terror scored on their first two shots of the second half, one off a free kick and another off a perfectly-placed distance shot that snuck in under the crossbar, to build a two-goal cushion (3-1). After Travers made two stops to keep the deficit at two, Gizzie found the back of the net in the 57th minute to get the Garnet within one.

- Swarthmore had a dangerous chance in the 77th minute as a pass into the box put Sydney Ross in a footrace with the goalkeeper. The goalie was able to beat Ross to the loose ball and lay out to knock it away. The keeper was then able to get back up in time to stop Isabella Specchierla's shot and keep the Green Terror in front. Gizzie had the Garnet's final shot on goal in the 81st minute and it was turned aside once more by the goalkeeper.
