SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's soccer team came up short in a Centennial Conference battle with Muhlenberg College, 1-0, at Clothier Field Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Mules scored the lone goal of the contest in the 42
nd minute off a free kick. The Garnet outshot Muhlenberg, 15-13, but only placed three of their attempts on goal. Swarthmore's four corner kick opportunities also did not produce results. The Garnet controlled possession at a 56 percent rate but the Mules defense was able to limit Swarthmore's dangerous chances.
Len Yamabe led the Garnet with five shots while
Eli Cogan made six saves in his first career start in the Swarthmore net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both goalkeepers tallied three saves over the first 40 minutes of the opening half to keep the game scoreless. Muhlenberg then struck for the only goal of the evening in the 42
nd minute. The Mules were awarded a free kick in the offensive midfield. The kick was sent into the box and deflected as it hit the ground towards the left post. A Muhlenberg attacker was able to beat Cogan to the ball and tap it in for a 1-0 lead.
- Cogan made a pair of stops early in the second half to keep the Garnet within one. The Mules had a good opportunity to increase their advantage in the 63
rd minute when they rang a shot off the crossbar. In the 64
th minute, Yamabe took a free kick at the top of the box but sent the ball high over the cage.
- Swarthmore had another quality chance in the 72
nd minute when
Anzel Zhen sent a cross into the box but a cutting
Joseph Eyiolowope had it go off his foot wide left.
Jackson Haynes nearly evened the score in the 82
nd minute with a header off a free kick but it went just high. The Garnet totaled three more shots in the closing minutes but none of them would go.
