WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Swarthmore College men's soccer team had its offensive drought continue with a 1-0 loss at McDaniel College in Centennial Conference action on Saturday.
The Garnet won the shot battle 19-5, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Swarthmore also had seven corner kicks compared to one for the Green Terror. McDaniel scored on its first shot of the contest midway through the opening half and made it stand for the victory.
With the defeat, the Garnet are eliminated from contention for the conference tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore tallied the first four shots of the game, only one of which found its way to the goalkeeper. The Green Terror had their first chance of the day in the 24
th minute and they converted to take the lead. McDaniel was awarded a free kick just outside the box on the right side. The ball was sent towards the left post and it was headed in from in front just inside the iron.
- The Green Terror rolled with the momentum to generate the next two shots but both were off frame. In the 36
th minute, the Garnet had a shot blocked at the top of the box and earned a corner kick. However, Swarthmore was not able to produce another attempt on goal from the opportunity. In the closing minutes of the half,
Len Yamabe sent a free kick on goal from just outside the box but the keeper was in position to make the stop.
- The Garnet's first strong chance of the second half came in the 64
th minute.
Toshiro Kenney dribbled around a defender to get a clear shot at the cage but the goalkeeper came up with the save to maintain McDaniel's one-goal edge. At the other end,
Eli Cogan provided a point-blank save for Swarthmore to keep the Garnet in the game.
- Swarthmore earned another corner kick in the 73
rd minute.
Anzel Zhen got off a shot from the top of the box that looked like it was going to rainbow in under the bar. However, the Green Terror goalkeeper leaped up and got his fingertips on it to knock it down and stifle the Garnet once again.

Stathis Kalathias recorded the last Swarthmore attempt on goal in the final minute. He gathered the ball and gained speed through the middle of the field. Kalathias fired a shot from 30 yards and the goalie was able to knock it down on the run to finish off the shutout.
