Volleyball Rolls Past DeSales in Three Sets

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team opened its weekend with a 3-0 victory at DeSales University on Friday. 

Alexia Enache led the way for the offense with 17 kills and a .302 hitting percentage. The reigning Centennial Offensive Player of the Week tallied her highest three-set kill total of the season and her second-highest overall total of her sophomore campaign. 

Emily Sun and Madeline Mountcastle both registered double-digit assists to pace Swarthmore's attack. Sun led the team with a game-high 19 assists, while Mountcastle tallied 14 assists.

Melissa Eyer paved the way on defense with 16 digs, while Hannah Humphreys had a game-high two blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet built themselves an early lead with four-unanswered points in the opening set, 7-4. Swarthmore held its lead for the remainder of the stanza and continued to build upon their advantage. Later in the set, Enache sparked five-unanswered points to pull ahead by eight. Enache went on to clinch the opening set with a kill, 25-14. 

- Both teams exchanged blows early in the second set. The Bulldogs put together the set's first run with a 4-1 swing to take a three-point lead, 17-14. However, the Garnet immediately countered with four-unanswered points to capture the lead. Isabel Adam kickstarted the run with a kill, while Aleida Moreno added an ace during the rally. DeSales regained the lead once more, but were unable to silence the Garnet, who ended the set with six-straight points. Enache bookended the run with a pair of kills to overtake the Bulldogs, 25-21.

- DeSales started off the third set with a 7-2 run, before the Garnet countered with six-straight points, 8-7. Enache continued to make an impact with three-straight kills during the team's run. DeSales regained the lead and pulled ahead by as many as three points, but were unable to keep the Garnet down. Adam ended up clinching victory with a kill to finish off DeSales, 25-23.
