GETTYSBURG, Pa. – After dropping the first set, the Swarthmore College women's volleyball team came back to win three in a row and defeat Gettysburg College on the road, 3-1, in a Centennial Conference matchup on Saturday.
The Garnet hit just .162 in the opening set but then posted at least a .257 attack percentage in the following three.
Alexia Enache led the way with 15 kills while
Angelina Heminway and
Keira Miles also reached double figures with 14 and 12 kills respectively. Enache also tallied a team-high five service aces.
Melissa Eyer racked up 19 digs and
Aleida Moreno added 13.
Madeline Mountcastle and
Emily Sun compiled 25 and 21 assists respectively with each also dropping in three aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bullets got off to a strong start with the first five points of the opening set. Swarthmore chipped away and got within one (9-8) but Gettysburg answered with four in a row to restore a five-point cushion (13-8). The Garnet closed the gap to three (14-11) before the Bullets scored five of the next six for their largest lead (19-12). Swarthmore came back with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to two (21-19) but Gettysburg recorded four of the next six to win the set, 25-21.
- The Bullets had another fast start in the second set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead. A service error followed by three
Isabel Adam kills got the Garnet within one (8-7) but Gettysburg responded with back-to-back points to lead by three. The score was 16-13 when Swarthmore rallied for seven consecutive points to go ahead 20-16. Heminway, Miles, and Adam all notched a kill and Sun tallied a pair of aces during the charge. The Bullets came back with four in a row to tie it at 20 but the Garnet recovered to score five of the next six to take the set, 25-21. Miles produced three kills during the stretch with Enache and
Hannah Humphreys adding one apiece.
- The teams were even at eight in the third set before Swarthmore took over with a 6-0 run. Enache totaled two aces with Mountcastle, Heminway, and Adam all contributing one kill. Gettysburg never came closer than three points the rest of the way as the Garnet went on to win the set, 25-18.
- Swarthmore carried the momentum into the fourth set, scoring the first five points. Mountcastle recorded two aces and a kill while Heminway and Enache also notched a kill. The Bullets cut into the deficit and were able to get within one (8-7) but the Garnet pulled away with a 7-2 surge to lead 15-9. Miles and Enache led the way with two kills apiece. With the score 16-12, Swarthmore strung together five more points for a commanding 21-12 advantage. Enache registered a pair of aces and a kill to spark the rally. The Garnet went on to clinch the match with a 25-17 decision.
