BALTIMORE – The Swarthmore College women's soccer team was dealt its first Centennial Conference defeat with a 1-0 setback at No. 8 Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday night.
The Blue Jays controlled possession for the majority of the contest and had a 23-10 advantage in shots. However, Hopkins placed just eight shots on goal while the Garnet put five of their 10 attempts on frame. Despite the effort, Swarthmore was unable to beat the Blue Jays goalkeeper. Hopkins produced the lone goal of the night in the 66

Ava Gizzie,
Sydney Ross, and
Celia Kanellakos all tallied three shots to lead the Garnet attack.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Jays tallied the first six shots of the contest but Travers stopped all three that were on target to keep it scoreless. The Garnet's first attempt came in the 18

- Gizzie again tried to break the ice for Swarthmore at the 26-minute mark but the effort was again turned aside by the keeper. The Garnet recorded two more shots in the half but both were off the mark.
- Swarthmore registered the first two shots of the second half but the Blue Jays defense did not let them through to the net, blocking both chances. Gizzie posted their third shot of the night in the 56
th minute but the goalie was able to make the stop once more. Ross tried to get one past the keeper in the 60
th minute but a diving save kept the score level. Kanellakos then missed a shot just wide over a minute later.
-
Charlotte Carleton's shot in the 66
th minute was turned aside and Hopkins countered to score the lone goal of the evening with 24:04 remaining. The goal came off a failed clearing attempt by the Swarthmore defense and the shot beat Travers to the lower left corner. Travers produced three more saves to keep it a one-goal game but the Blue Jays backline clamped down on the Garnet and did not allow a shot the rest of the way.
