Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Remains Unbeaten, Defeats Widener 2-1

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 2-1 victory over Widener University on Tuesday night. The Garnet improved to 5-0-4 after nine games of the season.

Ava Gizzie has picked up where they left off after being awarded the Centennial Rookie of the Year as a first-year. Gizzie scored two more goals today to increase their season total to nine goals and capture the conference lead for goals and points. They have scored in four-straight games.

Gizzie scored their first of two goals in the 12th minute, before adding an insurance tally in the 48th minute. Widener added its lone score in the 64th minute, but were unable to come through with a game-tying score.

Sofie Aird made two saves to earn her third win of the season. Emme Hansard also had an exceptional night on both sides of the ball. The senior defender shutdown her opponents on defense, while showcasing her excellent playmaking ability with her first assist of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hansard came away with a steal around midfield to set up Gizzie's first score in the 12th minute. The senior defender intercepted a free kick, before feeding the ball to Gizzie on the left side. The sophomore then lofted the ball over the keeper's head from outside the box for the game's first score.

- Swarthmore nearly cashed in on a penalty kick in the 27th minute after the keeper took down an attacker in the box. Macie Mangini took the attempt for the Garnet, but played her shot wide right. The Garnet controlled possession for the majority of the opening half with a 10-3 shot advantage.

- Gizzie added their second score early in the second half to give the Garnet a two-goal cushion in the 48th minute. Liesel Blau fed a pass to Isabella Specchierla, who touched a beautiful ball to Gizzie inside the box. The sophomore didn't miss as they beat the keeper to the opposite post for their second goal.

- Looking for the hat trick, Gizzie nearly found the back of the net once again after a remarkable crossing pass from Hansard. Gizzie touched the ball on goal, but had their attempt saved by a heads-up effort from the keeper.

- Widener scored their lone goal in the 64th minute to cut their deficit in half. The Pride were unable to generate much offense outside of their one goal. Aird made an easy save in the 71st minute as she was aided by an extraordinary defensive effort from her teammates.
