Men's Basketball Suffers First Conference Defeat, Caprise Matches Career-High

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team dropped its first Centennial Conference matchup of the season with a 74-51 loss to Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon.

The Garnet found themselves in an early hole after a 15-2 Bullets' run put the team at a double-digit deficit midway through the first half. Swarthmore was unable to make up ground in the second as the Bullets outscored them 31-26 and cruised to a double-digit win.

Michael Caprise matched a career-high with 27 points to lead all scorers. The senior big shot 9-of-13 from the field, while grabbing six rebounds for the Garnet.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams got off to a slow start as Eddie Paquette tied the game at 8-8 with a jumper at the 14:20 mark. Gettysburg then countered with a 15-2 run to take a 13-point advantage at the halfway mark of the opening stanza.

- Caprise helped Swarthmore claw back into the game with five-straight points. The big man knocked down a mid-range jumper and then followed with three free throws over the team's next couple possessions. Caprise then added another bucket, while a pair of Nyle Coleman free throws brought Swarthmore within eight points with 4:15 left.

- The Bullets regained momentum as they closed out the opening half on a 10-5 run. Coleman tallied the final five points for Swarthmore with two jumpers and a free throw in the final two minutes.

- Early in the second half, Caprise tallied the opening six points for the Garnet to keep pace with Gettysburg. The Bullets then rallied for a 9-2 run, while Caprise added a layup for Swarthmore's lone bucket during the stretch.

- Midway through the second, Swarthmore put together a run with seven-unanswered points. Brady Kageyama opened the rally with a layup, while Caprise added a three and a jumper to trim their deficit to 11 points with 10:53 left. However, the Bullets quickly closed the door and secured their victory with a 9-1 run to take a 66-47 lead with 3:01 left.
