Men’s Basketball Drops Overtime Thriller to Rowan, 91-86

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team wrapped up its non-conference slate with a tough overtime loss versus Rowan University, 91-86, on Wednesday night.

Cal Hanson sent the game into overtime with a jumper in the paint after securing an offensive rebound with seconds remaining. However, the Garnet were unable to complete the comeback as they fell to the Profs in overtime. The back-and-forth thriller featured 15 lead changes and 13 ties.  

Vinny DeAngelo paced the Garnet with 27 points on seven three-pointers, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Eddie Paquette put together a career-best performance with 22 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Michael Caprise added a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Hanson and Devin Burger contributed 10 points to round out five double-digit scorers for Swarthmore. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore got off to a fast start with seven-straight points to open the first two minutes of action. Paquette connected from long range to open the game, while also adding a jumper to close the run. The Profs quickly countered with eight-unanswered to take the lead before Burger hit from three-point range to regain the lead, 10-8.

- After Rowan tied the game, DeAngelo put Swarthmore ahead again with a three-pointer. However, the Profs punched back with nine-straight points to take a seven-point lead with 8:48 left.

- After Rowan built a 10-point advantage, Caprise helped slow down the Profs with four-straight free throws. Paquette then drained another triple to bring the Garnet within three points, before connecting on his third long ball to pull within one point. Rowan then brought the lead back to three before the halftime buzzer. 

- Coming out of halftime, Hanson knocked down a corner three to tie the game. Caprise then put Swarthmore ahead with a layup after stealing an offensive possession for the Garnet with a rebound.

- Rowan rallied as it pulled ahead by five points. DeAngelo helped bring the Garnet closer after knocking down a three to shrink the team's deficit to one point. Later in the stanza, DeAngelo tied the game with another triple before Hanson put Swarthmore in front with a pair of free throws at the 11:09 mark.

- Burger captured momentum as he buried a pair of threes to put Swarthmore ahead by four points with 9:43 left. Rowan then tied the game before pulling ahead by four with 6:39 left. 

- After trading late leads, DeAngelo connected from deep to tie the game with 1:57 remaining. With the Profs ahead by two points, the senior added another triple to jump ahead by one with 35-seconds remaining. Rowan then took the lead with a layup at the other end before Hanson added the game-tying bucket after securing an offensive rebound with seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

- The Garnet led early in overtime, but were unable to hold off the surging Profs. Rowan used a 6-0 run to pull ahead by two baskets and capture control with 2:29 left. Paquette kept Swarthmore alive with a three-pointer to pull within one point, but Rowan quickly answered with a bucket to build its lead to three points. The Profs held Swarthmore scoreless for the final two minutes as they held on for a five-point victory.
