Women’s Basketball Stumbles at Haverford, 51-41

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team couldn't overcome a tough shooting night as it fell to Haverford College, 51-41, on Wednesday night.

The Garnet broke out to a fast start with 16 points in the opening stanza, but were unable to maintain their success as they combined for 14 points in the second and third quarters.

Norah Wingfield paced the Garnet offense with 12 points, while Dana Bandurick followed with nine points and nine rebounds. Katelyn Becker was the main contributor off the bench with five points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Carly Murphy provided the Garnet with some early separation after hitting from three-point range, 9-4, with 6:41 left in the first quarter. However, the Fords responded with a 14-5 run to pull ahead by four points with a minute remaining. Bandurick then ended the stanza with a driving layup to pull within a basket on the team's final possession, 18-16.

- Both teams struggled from the field in the second quarter as they combined for six field goals. Haverford opened on a 6-2 run to extend its lead to six points in the opening seven minutes. The Garnet then closed the gap with a Bandurick layup and a pair of Becker free throws to shrink their deficit back to two points. The Fords later regained control with a three-pointer, while Wingfield added a late layup to make it a one-possession game, 27-24.

- In the third, Haverford held the Garnet to single-digit points for the second-straight quarter. Neve Yair opened the stanza with a jumper, before Haverford countered with a 9-0 run to take a 10-point lead. Alyssa Hayashi stopped the Fords' run with a jumper, but Haverford closed the quarter with four free throws to build their lead back to double-digits, 40-30.

- Swarthmore scored six-straight points early in the fourth quarter to cut their deficit in half, 42-36. The Fords countered with seven-unanswered to expand their lead to a game-high 13 points. The Garnet attempted to close the gap with a Wingfield jumper followed by a Becker three-pointer, but were unable to climb out of their deficit.
