Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Drops Hard-Fought Battle to Widener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's soccer team fell short in a back-and-forth battle against local rival Widener University, 1-0, on Wednesday night. Both teams fought to a draw the majority of the game until the Pride broke through with the lone goal in the 86th minute.

Christian Bignotti helped lead the defense with another gutsy performance between the pipes. The junior made a couple highlight-reel stops and tallied three total saves on the evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet tried to make things happen in the ninth minute with consecutive corner kicks. Toshiro Kenney generated a shot attempt from the first corner, but had it blocked behind the endline. The Pride answered with a flurry of attacks in the other direction, but were unable to generate a shot on goal.

- Widener's keeper made an excellent save in the 19th minute to rob Joseph Eyiolowope of a potential goal. The sophomore fired a shot to the left post from the opposite side, but had his attempt deflected away by the diving keeper. Moments later, Christian Bignotti then returned the favor with a diving save of his own. The junior ranged to his left side to punch the ball out of harm's way.

- Swarthmore had a couple good chances at the end of the opening half. Following a corner kick, Matthew Loreg had a header saved by the keeper and then Tejas Sarna had another header blocked off the ensuing rebound. The Garnet held a slight advantage in time of possession in the opening half, but generated three less shots.

- Adrien Marcelli registered a shot on goal in the 52nd minute as he cut to the left side and tried to sneak the ball past the near post. The attempt was corralled by Pride's keeper.

- Widener threatened midway through the second half, but had a goal waved off due to offsides. The Pride eventually broke through with a goal in the 86th minute to break the scoreless tie. The attacker used two passes to get deep in the Garnet zone and beat Bignotti to the left post.
