CARLISLE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College field hockey team won its seventh consecutive game and remained unbeaten in Centennial Conference play with a 4-2 victory at Dickinson College on Saturday afternoon.
Hayley Harris scored twice on a pair of penalty strokes to lead the Garnet while
Katherine Kohn and
Anna Stancofski also found the back of the cage. Swarthmore had a 16-15 edge in shots and an 11-9 advantage in penalty corners.
The Garnet's seven-game win streak is their longest since 1997-98, when they claimed nine straight victories across two seasons. It is the longest streak within one season since Swarthmore triumphed in its first 11 contests in 1997.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Red Devils struck first on the opening shot of the game in the eighth minute, beating the goalkeeper from the middle of the scoring area.
- The Garnet answered with a dominating 30-second stretch that resulted in their first goal. Swarthmore had three penalty corners and got off three shots before being awarded a penalty stroke. Harris put the ball into the back left corner to tie it at one in the 12
th minute.
- Kohn put the Garnet in front less than two minutes into the second quarter.
Sarah Cooper sent a long pass towards the goalmouth and Kohn cut in to tap it past the keeper for a 2-1 lead.
- Dickinson had a prime chance to even it up in the 21
st minute but the shot found the post. Instead, Harris increased Swarthmore's cushion to two with another penalty stroke in the 24
th minute, this time to the right side of the cage.
- Stancofski batted in a rebound in front in the 36
th minute to put the Garnet up three (4-1) in the third quarter.
- The Red Devils closed the gap to two with a goal off a penalty corner with just over six minutes to play in the fourth. Swarthmore did not allow another shot on goal in closing out the victory.
