No. 25 Field Hockey Drops Nationally-Ranked Showdown at No. 16 Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The No. 25 Swarthmore College field hockey team fell short against No. 16 Ursinus College, 2-1, in a nationally-ranked Centennial Conference showdown on Wednesday night. It was the second-straight week the Garnet faced off against the No. 16 team in the nation after defeating previously-ranked Bryn Mawr College, 1-0, last Wednesday.

After a first period goal from the Bears, Sophia Hitchingham answered with the lone Swarthmore score for her team-leading sixth of the season. The Bears eventually came through with the game-winning tally in the 58th minute of play in a game that came down to the wire.

The Bears outshot Swarthmore 28-15 and had a 18-6 advantage in corner attempts. Cassandra Conklin played a crucial role in keeping the Garnet within striking distance as she recorded a game-high 10 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ursinus controlled opportunities early in the game with the first six shots of the contest. Conklin was forced to make several saves early in the action, while Emma Duffield prevented a Bears score with a defensive save. Ursinus was able to break through later in the quarter with the game's first tally in the 12th minute. Swarthmore weathered the storm early as the Bears outshot them 11-1 in the opening stanza.

- After fighting off an early Ursinus run in the second quarter, the Garnet began to flip the script on the Bears as they outshot their opponent 9-4. Jackie Crowley fired three shot attempts within a minute span to light a fire in Swarthmore's attack. The Garnet then responded later in the stanza with a flurry of shot attempts before finally breaking through with a Hitchingham goal in the 28th minute. The junior carried the ball towards the right side before elevating a strike past the goalie to the far post, 1-1.

- Swarthmore had an opportunity off a corner attempt early in the third quarter, but were unable to cash in. The Garnet then held their ground as they fought off six Ursinus corner attempts to end the stanza with a 1-1 draw. The Bears had six more corners in the quarter and outshot the Garnet 8-2.

- The Garnet registered two shots early in the fourth quarter, but were unable to find the back of the cage. After fighting off several corner attempts, the Bears broke through with the game-winning score with just over two minutes remaining in regulation. Following the corner, the Bears had an attempt hit the post, while the rebound was tapped in for the decisive score, 2-1.
