Men’s Tennis Advances in Championship Singles and Doubles

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Swarthmore College men's tennis team opened up play at the ITA Regional Tournament on Friday.

Michael Melnikov/ Utham Koduri advanced to tomorrow's round of 16 teams in the Championship Doubles bracket. The top-seeded duo won their second round matchup after earning an opening round bye. The Garnet were also victorious in three other first round matchups in the Championship Doubles bracket.

Melnikov advanced to tomorrow's championship singles action with a pair of victories. Max Lindstrom also advanced in the championship bracket, while Aamish Pal advanced in the B1 singles bracket.

HOW IT HAPPENED
CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES
- Melnikov/ Koduri advanced to tomorrow's field of 16 teams in the Championship Doubles bracket. After earning a first-round bye, the top-seeded pairing defeated Lynchburg College, 8-4, in the second round of play.

- Charley Force/ Andres Fente were victorious in their opening round matchup. The Garnet defeated Christopher Newport, 8-2, but fell to Stevens Institute of Technology in the following round, 8-3.

- The first-year duo of Winston Zhang/ Grahame Brown won their opening round matchup versus Saint Mary's College, 8-2. The pairing then dropped their second round matchup against third-seeded Carnegie Mellon, 8-3.

- Graham Hadesman/ Max Pogorelov teamed up for an opening round victory against Franklin & Marshall College, 8-5. The Garnet then fell in the second round to second-seeded Mary Washington, 8-3.

CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES
- Top-seeded Melnikov won a competitive matchup versus Mary Washington. Melnikov took the opening set, 6-3, but dropped the second set by a 6-4 decision. However, the sophomore closed out the match strong with a 10-2 victory in the tiebreaker. Melnikov then advanced to tomorrow's action with a 6-4, 6-1, win over Stevens. He will battle Joshua Kim of Johns Hopkins in tomorrow's round of 16 competitors.

- Lalith Suresh took down Shenandoah in the opening round. The sophomore took the opening set 6-3, before sealing victory with a 6-2 decision. He then fell to Carnegie Melon in the second round, 6-2, 6-2.

- Rishi Verma won comfortably in his opening matchup versus Christopher Newport with a pair of 6-1 decisions. He was then eliminated in the second round by Johns Hopkins, 6-2, 6-2..

- Charley Force advanced past the second round with a victory, 6-2, 6-1, over Gettysburg College. The senior then took on another Centennial opponent from Haverford College, but fell in a tiebreaker, 6-1, 3-6, 11-9.

- Max Lindstrom outlasted his opponent from Muhlenberg College in the opening round. After narrowly dropping the first set, 7-5, Lindstrom turned things around with a 6-0 victory in the second set. The sophomore was then victorious in the deciding third set with a 10-3 decision. Lindstrom advanced to tomorrow's action with a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Mary Washington. He will battle Washington & Lee in the round of 16 competitors.

- Zhang dropped a tightly-contested matchup versus Stevens. After dropping the first set, 6-2, the first-year bounced back to tie the match with a 6-2 decision. However, Zhang fell short of the comeback in the third set, 10-7.

B1 SINGLES
- Pal won the opening round of singles action by an 8-3 decision over Muhlenberg College. He then advanced to tomorrow's action with an 8-3 win over Stevens.

- Aadhi Raja narrowly dropped his opening round match versus Averett University, 8-6.

The Garnet continue play at the ITA Regionals tomorrow.
