Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 22 Women’s Soccer Holds Off Widener on the Road

CHESTER, Pa. - The No. 22 Swarthmore College women's soccer team backed up its national ranking with a 3-2 victory over Widener University on Wednesday night.

First-years Ava Gizzie and Lauren Lior continued their incredible starts to the season with another pair of goals. The duo both recorded a goal for the second-straight game as they increased their combined point total to 34 on the season.

Gizzie, who was chosen the Centennial Offensive Player of the Week, scored a goal for the fourth-straight game and has scored in seven of the first eight games. They currently lead the conference with 20 points and eight goals, while Lior ranks third in both categories.

The Garnet struck early and often in the opening half with all three of their goals occurring in a six-minute span. Gizzie tallied the game's first goal in the 17th minute, while Lior quickly piled on with a score just over a minute later. Keren Maze then connected on her second goal of the season to put Swarthmore ahead by three points in the 23rd minute.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Following a Pride throw-in, the Garnet intercepted the ball near midfield. Gizzie then muscled their way towards the goal before firing a strike from 25-yards out to beat the keeper to the far-right post, 1-0.

- The Garnet maintained pressure after adding another goal in the following minute. After Allie Zitelli wrestled a pass away from the Pride on the defensive end, the junior connected with Lior on the opposite side to spark a counter attack for Swarthmore. Lior then carried the ball to the middle of the box before beating the keeper high to the left corner, 2-0.

- Swarthmore forced Widener into a deep deficit with its third-unanswered goal in the 23rd minute. Gizzie fed the ball to Maze with a perfectly-placed pass through a tight window of Pride defenders. Maze then carried the ball within 10 yards of the keeper and placed the ball to the opposite post for the score, 3-0.

- Widener got a goal back towards the end of the opening stanza on a Swarthmore own goal. The Garnet dominated the majority of the stanza with a 12-2 shot advantage as they carried a 3-1 lead into intermission.

- The Pride added another tally in the 80th minute, but were unable to dig themselves out of an early deficit. Swarthmore outshot the Pride, 27-5, on the evening and held Widener to just two shots on goal.
