SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's soccer team put forth a strong effort but could not climb out of a 2-0 hole as the Garnet fell to visiting Washington College (Md.), 2-1, in Centennial Conference action on Wednesday.
Swarthmore came out with energy in the second half, resulting in its lone goal in the 48
th minute by
Tejas Sarna. The Garnet owned a 17-9 advantage in shot attempts and had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal but could not net the equalizer.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore recorded the contest's first three shots before the Shoremen answered with a pair of corner kicks, one of which produced the first goal of the match in the 15
th minute. Washington put the ball in just under the crossbar out of a scramble in front.
- The Shoremen took a 2-0 lead in the 34
th minute on a service up the field that ended with a tap-in at the right post.
- The Garnet came out flying in the second half and their first shot of the period closed the gap to one.
Koome Murungi took a free kick near the sideline from 30 yards out.
Matthew Loreg got his head on it and flicked it over to Sarna, who dove in with a header at the right post to put it in the back of the net.
- Sarna nearly had the tying goal just two minutes later but the effort found the right post and stayed out.
- Swarthmore totaled seven more shots over the last 40 minutes but were able to convert.
