SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Sophia Hitchingham netted the game-winner with 2:47 remaining in regulation to give the Swarthmore College field hockey team a 1-0 victory over No. 16 Bryn Mawr College in a Centennial Conference matchup on Wednesday night.
Hitchingham's heroics allowed the Garnet to increase their win streak to six matches and earn their first triumph over a nationally-ranked opponent since late in the 2021 season. The Owls outshot Swarthmore, 7-5, and racked up nine penalty corners but the Garnet defense stood tall.
Cassandra Conklin tallied three saves to earn her fourth shutout in the past six games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Jackie Crowley got off the first shot of the game for Swarthmore but it was stopped by the Bryn Mawr goalkeeper. The Owls put two shots on goal in the opening quarter but Conklin came up with the stop on both occasions.
- The Garnet backline played strong in the second, not conceding a single Bryn Mawr shot. Swarthmore had a pair of penalty corners but came up empty.
- However, the Owls brought the pressure in the third quarter, earning seven penalty corner opportunities. The Garnet defense was up to the task, clearing the ball out of the circle or drawing a foul on several chances. Conklin came through with another save during the period.
- Swarthmore locked it down again in the final frame, not allowing a shot once more during the last 15 minutes. Late in the stanza, the Garnet earned back-to-back penalty corners. On the second,
Anna Stancofski received the ball at the top of the circle and found Hitchingham down low at the left post. Hitchingham turned and fired a shot between the goalie's legs for the only goal that Swarthmore needed to pull off the upset.
