Volleyball Stumbles Versus Elizabethtown, 3-0

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team had its four-game win streak come to a halt versus Elizabethtown College, 3-0, on Tuesday night.

The Garnet battled hard in an intense third set, which ended in a 33-31 Elizabethtown decision, but were unable to force extra sets. Swarthmore  narrowly dropped the second set, 25-23, after the Blue Jays opened with a comfortable first set win, 25-18.

Kaylee Zhang was excellent on the attack with a game-high 19 kills for a .235 hitting percentage. Trisha Razdan also posted double-digit kills with 12 total. As a team, the Garnet had 10 more kills than the Blue Jays, but were out-blocked 12-3.

On the defensive side, Ellie Streeper posted a career-best 30 digs in just three sets. She also added an ace and three assists to her stat sheet.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams exchanged runs in a back-and-forth opening to the first set. The Garnet began to create momentum with four-straight kills as they pulled ahead by two points, 14-12. The Blue Jays then countered with six-unanswered points to tilt the game in their favor. Swarthmore pieced together consecutive points to pull themselves within a couple points, but were unable to cut further into the Blue Jays' lead, 25-18.

- The Blue Jays looked strong early in the second set as they led midway through the stanza. The Garnet were able to gain traction with a 3-1 run on three kills from Zhang to trim their deficit to three points, 15-12. Elizabethtown continued to control the set before Swarthmore rattled off three-straight kills out of a timeout to pull within two points. Razdan collected a pair of kills during the rally, while Zhang added the other kill, 22-20. The Garnet put pressure on the Blue Jays late in the set, but were unable to make up for their slow start, 25-23.

- Swarthmore bounced back after surrendering the first three points of the third set. The Garnet pieced together a 7-1 rally to force the Blue Jays to burn the first timeout. The Garnet ended the run with a Streeper ace, 11-9. Elizabethtown then responded out of the timeout with four-straight points to take control once more. The Blue Jays went on a 4-1 run to pull ahead by two points and prompt the Garnet to use their first timeout. Later in the set, Swarthmore tied the game with a pair of Alexia Enache kills to climb back, 21-21. Neither team would quit as both squads exchanged points in a wild third set. However, the Blue Jays eventually outlasted the Garnet as they clinched victory with a 33-31 win.
