Women’s Tennis Impresses in Opening Round of ITA Regionals

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team opened competition at the ITA Regional Tournament on Saturday.

Nathalie Williams, Lola Diaz and Kathleen Shiffer advanced to the second day of the tournament after surviving the first two rounds of singles play. Williams won her second round match after an opening-round bye, while Diaz and Shiffer both earned their way to tomorrow's field with a pair of wins. 

Diaz and her doubles partner Oviya Kumaran also advanced to tomorrow's doubles action with an opening round win. Diaz had an outstanding day as she pieced together three combined wins.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SINGLES

- After earning a first-round bye, Williams backed up her status as one of the region's top players. Williams cruised past her opponent from Carnegie Mellon with a pair of 6-1 decisions to advance to tomorrow's action. The junior will battle Hana Kimmey of Mary Washington at 11:00 a.m. 

- Diaz captured a pair of singles victories to advance to Sunday's action. The sophomore opened the day with a dominating victory over Grove City, 6-0, 6-1. She then outlasted her opponent in a tightly-contested win over Mary Washington. Diaz took the opening set 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker before her opponent withdrew in the second set due to injury. She will play Jay Xiao of Johns Hopkins University tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. 

- Shiffer was victorious in both of her matches to advance in the tournament. The sophomore opened with a win over Mary Washington, 6-3, 6-0. She then outdueled Johns Hopkins in a tightly-contested battle. After taking the opening set 7-6 with a 9-7 tiebreaker, Shiffer was unable to close out her opponent in two sets. She then bounced back in the deciding set to defeat her opponent, 10-8. She will play Danna Taylor of Carnegie Mellon tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. 

- Kumaran came out ahead in her first round matchup versus Shenandoah with a pair of 6-3 decisions. Kumaran then fell in the second round to Johns Hopkins. 

- Eda Mjekiqi won her first round matchup versus Washington & Lee. She took the opening set 6-2 and then closed out the match with a 6-3 victory. The first-year then withdrew from her second match against Haverford College. 

DOUBLES
- Diaz/ Kumaran advanced to tomorrow's action with a doubles victory. The doubles duo defeated Mary Washington, 8-2, to add to their singles success. They will play Christopher Newport tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. 

- Shiffer/ Mjekiqi fell just short in an intense battle against Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays came out on top 8-7 with an 11-9 tiebreaker.

The Garnet continue play at tomorrow's ITA Regionals.
