Women’s Soccer Earns Shutout Victory at No. 25 Franklin & Marshall

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's soccer team preserved its unbeaten record with a shutout victory over No. 25 Franklin & Marshall College, 2-0, on a windy Saturday afternoon.

First-years Lauren Lior and Ava Gizzie continued their scorching starts to the season to lead the Garnet to a massive victory. Lior tallied the opening score in the sixth minute, while Gizzie added an insurance goal in the 86th minute.

Gizzie scored their conference-leading seventh goal of the season, while claiming the conference lead in points with 17 total. They have scored a goal in six of the team's seven games this season. The first-year duo of Gizzie and Lior have combined for 11 goals and 29 points.

The Garnet defense earned their third shutout of the season and the team's second shutout in conference play. The defense held the Diplomats in check as they allowed just three shots on goal. Lila Travers was also excellent in a full 90-minutes of action with three saves to record her first-career shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore challenged the Diplomats' keeper early with a flurry of quality scoring chances. Gizzie fired a shot from the left side of the box, which was deflected by a leaping keeper over the near post. Moments later, Lior pressured Franklin & Marshall's attack from inside its own box and forced a deep turnover. The first-year then had her ensuing shot on goal saved, but connected on a second-chance opportunity after Marea Lee sent another shot into traffic.

- The Garnet were responsible for the opening five shots of the game before the Diplomats had their first opportunity in the 27th minute. Travers dropped to her knees to corral her first save of the game before recording her second save following a corner attempt.

- The Swarthmore defense did an exceptional job of swarming the ball and limiting scoring chances in the opening half. The Garnet outshot their nationally-ranked opponent 7-3 in the opening 45-minutes of play.

- In the 86th minute, Sophia Vesely intercepted a pass from the goalkeeper and played it back to Gizzie on the left side of the box. The first-year raced past a couple defenders before beating the keeper with a sliding shot to put the Diplomats away, 2-0.
