Swarthmore Battles Top Competition in Swarthmore/Haverford Invite

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's tennis team opened the season on Friday and Saturday at the Swarthmore/Haverford Invitational. 

Swarthmore squared off against Hamilton and Vassar with a 12-7 match record to open the weekend. Vassar finished last season ranked No. 35 nationally, while Hamilton had one singles player in the nation's top-50.  

First-year standout Rishi Verma impressed in the opening two matchups with a 3-0 overall record. Verma earned singles wins against both opponents to go along with a doubles win over Hamilton.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet were victorious in all four doubles matches against Hamilton. Michael Melnikov/ Utham Koduri picked up where they left off last season as one of the most dominant duos in the nation. The pairing bested their opponent, 8-5, to open their sophomore seasons, while Andres Fente/ Max Pogorelov also won their doubles matchup by an 8-5 decision. 

- Swarthmore closed out doubles play with a pair of 8-1 victories from Winston Zhang/ Grahame Brown and Verma / Max Lindstrom.

- Verma earned his second victory against Hamilton with an impressive singles performance. The first-year took the opening set 6-1, before closing out the match with a 6-2 second set. 

- Lalith Suresh and Andres Fente closed out the matchup with a pair of singles wins. Both sophomores won by 6-2, 6-4 decisions as the Garnet went 7-3 versus Hamilton. The victory marked Fente's second versus Hamilton on the evening. 

SWARTHMORE vs. VASSAR
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Swarthmore won one of their three doubles matches against Vassar. Zhang/ Brown picked up the lone doubles victory for Swarthmore with an 8-7 decision. All three doubles matches were highly-competitive with narrow victories on all sides. 

- The Garnet turned things around with five singles victories. Charley Force got off to a fast start with a 6-2 decision in his opening set, before closing out the match with a 6-1 victory. 

- Verma remained perfect on the early season with a victory in singles action. The first-year impressed as he took down his opponent, 6-3, 6-2.

- Aamish Pal battled to a 7-5 decision in the opening set. The sophomore then went on to take the match with a 6-2 second set.

- Fente picked up the team's final victory with a 7-5, 6-2 victory. The Garnet went 5-4 overall versus Vassar.
