Women’s Soccer Tops Muhlenberg, Earns Second-Straight Centennial Win

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's soccer team picked up its second-straight Centennial Conference victory as the team bested Muhlenberg College, 4-1, on Wednesday night. The victory marked the program's ninth-straight win over the Muhls, which dates back to 2014.

Ava Gizzie continued their red-hot start to the season as the first-year buried two more goals and an assist for the Garnet. Gizzie has scored a goal in five of the team's first six games. They now have a team-leading six goals and 15 points, which is tied for most in the Centennial Conference.

The reigning Centennial Player of the Week Allie Zitelli notched her third goal of the season with a score in each of the past three games, while Callie Stoltz netted her first-career goal to cap off the scoring. The Garnet have already received goals from 10 different players this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Muhlenberg stunned the Garnet early in the game with a tally in the third minute. However, Swarthmore withstood the early blow as it quickly regrouped with an equalizer in the fifth minute. Gizzie played the ball towards the goal off a corner kick, while Zitelli headed the ball home at the near post, 1-1.

- Gizzie connected on her first tally in the 10th minute to give their team the lead. Emme Hansard created the opportunity by showcasing incredible footwork as she beat a couple defenders down the left side of the field. The junior then dribbled the ball down the left endline, before connecting with Gizzie at the center of the box, 2-1.

- The first-year wasn't done as they added another goal in the 26th minute. After receiving a pass from Zitelli, Gizzie dribbled down the left side before lofting a ball high towards the goal. The ball found its way past the leaping keeper and caught the upper-right corner of the net, 3-1.

- After controlling the opening half with a 12-4 shot advantage, the Garnet piled on in the second half with another insurance tally. Callie Stoltz netted her first-career goal off a free kick from 45-yards out. The sophomore's ball took a couple high bounces in the box as it snuck over the keeper's head and into the goal, 4-1.

- Swarthmore did a good job of limiting scoring attempts in the second half. Dahlia Bedward stepped up towards the end of the half as she made a couple quick saves amidst a flurry of attempts from the Muhls. Bedward denied the offense on their initial attempt, before the second shot found the post and the Muhls' third attempt was saved once more by a sliding Bedward.
