Volleyball Sweeps Weekend Opener at Scranton Invitational

SCRANTON, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's volleyball team carried over their success from last season with a weekend sweep at the Scranton Invitational. After defeating Scranton on Friday, the Garnet closed out opening weekend with Saturday victories over Smith College, 3-1, and SUNY New Paltz, 3-1. 

Kaylee Zhang ended the weekend with 42 kills, 54 digs and a .269 hitting percentage over the opening three games. The 2022 All-American selection had team-high kills against Smith and SUNY New Paltz with 14 and 10, respectively. Dani Pena was also excellent on offense with 97 assists and only three set errors. 

Sakura Shimozono impressed in her collegiate debut with a team-best 61 digs on the weekend. She capped off her weekend with 14 digs in both of today's matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Pioneers gained separation with a 10-1 run early in the opening set to pull ahead 10-4. The Garnet slowly chipped away at their early deficit, before piecing together four-unanswered points to pull within one point, 21-20. Jordan Perry started the rally with a kill, while Ellie Streeper contributed with a service ace. However, Smith countered with four-straight points to claim the opening set, 25-20. 

- Swarthmore flipped the script in the second set with a quick start. The Garnet jumped out to a 10-2 lead in a run that featured two Kaylee Zhang and Jordan Perry kills and a pair of service aces from Alexia Enache. The Garnet led by four or more points for the remainder of the second set as they kept their opponent at a distance. Smith attempted to put together one last surge as they rallied for three-straight points, but Zhang closed out the set with consecutive kills, 25-19. 

- The Garnet carried momentum into the third set with a dominating 25-7 victory. Swarthmore jumped out to an early 7-1 lead and built on their advantage throughout the set. The Garnet rallied for seven-straight kills midway through the set, before eventually putting the Pioneers away with a 9-1 run to claim a pivotal third set. 

- Swarthmore rattled off four-straight points to open the fourth set before the Pioneers countered with five-unanswered to take an early lead. Both teams traded leads early in the stanza until the Pioneers gained some separation to take a three-point advantage, 14-11. However, Swarthmore regrouped with an 11-3 swing to pull ahead by five points after Streeper capped off the run with back-to-back service aces, 22-17. Smith threatened late in the stanza as they pulled within a couple points until Enache closed out the match with a kill.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- After a competitive start to the opening set, Swarthmore pulled away with a 12-1 rally to overtake the Hawks' lead, 18-10. New Paltz eventually closed the gap to shrink their deficit to two points, but the Garnet answered with a 4-1 run to close the set, 25-20.

- New Paltz evened up the score with a victory in the second set. The Garnet jumped out to an early lead as they held a four-point advantage midway through the stanza, 12-8. The Hawks then went on a 10-3 run to swing momentum in their favor. New Paltz never looked back as they held on for a 25-20 set victory.

- Swarthmore captured a pivotal third set to recapture momentum. After both teams traded leads early, the Garnet broke the tie with a 6-2 run to pull ahead by four points, 14-10. The Garnet then ran away with the set as they coasted to victory with a 7-1 rally to close the set, 25-15.

- The Hawks started off hot in a must-win fourth set as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead. Swarthmore later flipped momentum with five-straight points and then rallied for a 6-1 swing to take a four-point advantage, 20-14. The Garnet kept New Paltz at a distance as they coasted to a 25-18 win. Pena clinched the match with her second kill of the match.
