Volleyball Drops Home Opener to Bowdoin, 3-0

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team dropped their home opener versus Bowdoin College, 3-1, on Friday night. The Garnet battled in the third set as they nearly forced extra sets, but were unable to overcome an early deficit.

Kaylee Zhang led the attack with 10 kills, while Jordan Perry tallied six on the evening. Dani Pena also contributed 25 assists to pace the team's attack. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Following an early Swarthmore lead, the Polar Bears jumped out early with five-straight points to take a 10-7 advantage. The Garnet shrunk their deficit to two points with a kill from Zindzhi Montgomery until Bowdoin lengthened their lead with four-straight points, 16-10. The Polar Bears led the rest of the way as they took the opening set, 25-17.

- Both teams went back-and-forth early on in a pivotal second set. Angelina Heminway helped the Garnet gain traction with three-consecutive to provide some momentum as she brought the Garnet within two points, 16-14. Following a Garnet timeout, the Bears rallied for three-straight points to take a 21-15 advantage. Perry helped bring the Garnet back with three kills late in the set to help spark a 5-1 run as they pulled within two points. However, Bowdoin rallied for two kills and an ace to claim the second set, 25-20.

- Bowdoin jumped out early in the third set with a 7-2 lead. The Garnet gained some traction with consecutive kills from Trisha Razdan and Pena, but couldn't hold off another Bears' run as they pulled ahead 18-9. Following a Garnet timeout, Swarthmore turned things around with a 8-3 swing to cut their deficit to four, 21-17. Ellie Streeper then recorded an ace after exiting the timeout, while Zhang followed with a kill to pull within two points. The Garnet kept pressure on Bowdoin, but didn't have enough to dig out of an early hole, 25-21.

UP NEXT
The Garnet (3-1) return to action tomorrow as they battle Arcadia University and Salisbury University on the second day of the Garnet Invitational. Swarthmore will open play tomorrow at 11:00 am versus the Knights before wrapping up the weekend with the Sea Gulls at 6:30 pm. Salisbury defeated Arcadia, 3-0, to kick off tonight's action.
