Women’s Soccer Cruises Past Gettysburg in Conference Opener, 3-0

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's soccer team renewed its rivalry with Gettysburg College as the Garnet bested the Bullets, 3-0, in the Centennial Conference opener on Saturday afternoon. Swarthmore has now won its previous three matchups against Gettysburg after defeating them in the regular season and postseason in 2022.

The Garnet rode three early goals to victory as they dictated play against the Bullets. Ava Gizzie opened the scoring with their fourth goal in the first five games. Swarthmore also received opening half goals from Allie Zitelli and Liesel Blau, who netted her first collegiate goal.

Swarthmore possessed the ball for the majority of the game as the team outshot its opponent 22-4. The Garnet allowed just two shots on goal, which were both saved by Lila Travers in the second half. Nora Greer played the opening half between the pipes, but did not face a shot on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lauren Lior's speed created issues for the Bullets, especially early in the contest. Lior broke free from the defense after an excellent leading pass by Zitelli from midfield. In the fourth minute, the first-year directed a shot towards the goal, which rolled past the keeper and was tapped in by Gizzie for their fourth goal of the season. Gizzie did an excellent job of following Lior's shot as she cut towards the opposite post to finish the score.

- The Garnet maintained pressure on their opponent as they kept attacking Gettysburg's back line. After earning a penalty kick on a handball, Zitelli added a quick insurance goal in the 10th minute. The junior beat the keeper to the low post for her second goal of the season.

- Swarthmore added one more goal in the 21st minute with a score from Blau. Much like the opening goal, Lior's speed created a matchup nightmare for Gettysburg as she got past the defense and fired a shot on net. The goal was deflected by an excellent diving attempt from the keeper, but Blau was at the opposite post to knock home her first collegiate tally. The goal marked Lior's second assist of the night and her team-best fourth of the season.

- The Garnet kept Gettysburg in check for the majority of the game, but especially in the first half. Swarthmore did not allow a shot in the opening stanza as they kept Gettysburg away from their goal for nearly the entire half. The Bullets only recorded two shots on goal in the game, which were both saved by Travers in the second half.
