Men’s Soccer Draws Against Gettysburg in Centennial Opener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's soccer team battled to a draw in its Centennial Conference opener versus Gettysburg College, 1-1, on Saturday night.

After a scoreless first half, Len Yamabe tallied the lone goal for the Garnet in the 60th minute to record his first collegiate goal. However, Gettysburg went on to tie the game in the 67th minute with a header.

The Garnet and Bullets were evenly matched in a back-and-forth contest. Gettysburg outshot the Garnet 14-9 on the evening, while Swarthmore held a slim 6-4 advantage in shots on target.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams battled to a scoreless draw in the opening half as they possessed the ball evenly. Gettysburg led the way with nine total shots, while Swarthmore tallied three. However, the Garnet held a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal.

- Early in the contest, Jackson Haynes helped defuse a scoring opportunity with a sliding block inside the box. Gettysburg made runs at the net, but were unable to generate many scoring opportunities.

- Swarthmore had a great opportunity midway through the half when Joseph Eyiolowope forced the keeper to make a tremendous save to rob the sophomore of a goal as he carried the ball towards the goal. Following the ensuing corner kick, Ethan Ernst had a good look at the net, but fired his shot high above the crossbar.

- Following a Swarthmore throw-in from inside the attacking zone, Eyiolowope touched the ball to Yamabe, who then beat the keeper to the far post for the game's first goal. The tally marked Yamabe's first collegiate goal. Prior to Yamabe's goal, the Garnet had two excellent opportunities from Adrien Marcelli, which both resulted in crucial saves.

- The Bullets tied the game in the 67th minute off a header from in front of the goal. The Gettysburg wing connected with his teammate on a centering pass to even the score, 1-1.
