GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Swarthmore College women's soccer team nearly came out on top on the road in a battle between two unbeaten squads but a last-minute goal by Rowan University forced the Garnet to settle for a 2-2 draw against the Profs, a perennial NCAA Tournament participant, on Wednesday night.
Veronica Gibbons and
Allie Zitelli hit the back of the net for Swarthmore and
Keren Maze set up both goals to push her team-leading assist total to four. The Garnet had a 13-11 edge in shots on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore started strong as
Ava Gizzie and
Lauren Lior both recorded chances within the opening five minutes but the Rowan goalkeeper stopped both shots.
- A wild sequence in the 23
rd minute saw the Profs clang a pair of shots off the crossbar and right post before Gizzie was thwarted by the crossbar themself at the other end. Shortly thereafter, Maze took a corner kick for the Garnet and Gibbons headed it into the cage for her second goal of the year and a 1-0 Swarthmore lead in the 25
th minute.
- Rowan evened the score on the next shot of the game after a turnover at midfield in the 37
th minute.
- The Garnet went back in front in the 70
th minute with Maze connecting with Zitelli at the top of the box and Zitelli blasting it in from 25 yards out for her first tally of the season.
-
Lila Travers came up with a couple of big saves in goal for Swarthmore over the final 10 minutes as it looked like the Garnet would come away with the win. However, the Profs capitalized on a scramble in the box and sent a shot off the right post and into the net for the tying goal with just 43 seconds to go.
