Hitchingham Completes Comeback in Double OT Thriller

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team showed its resiliency as they overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat DeSales University, 3-2, in double overtime on Wednesday night.

The Garnet trailed the Bulldogs by two goals early in the third stanza before cutting the lead in half with an Amelia Landry score. Swarthmore then forced overtime with a Katherine Kohn tally in the 56th minute, before walking off winners with a Sophia Hitchingham double-overtime, game-winner.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore had chances early in the contest with a plethora of corners in the opening two stanzas. The Garnet held a 12-5 penalty corner advantage over their opponent in the first half, but were unable to break through with a goal. DeSales was responsible for the lone tally of the half with a goal towards the end of the first quarter.

- The Garnet outshot their opponent 6-2 in the second quarter, but neither team was able to score. Brooke Findlay had a quality scoring chance early in the half, but was unable to finish as the Garnet took a one-goal deficit into halftime.

- The Bulldogs struck early in the third with a quick tally to expand their lead, 2-0. However, the Garnet responded with mental toughness as they immediately countered with their first tally of the game. Deborah Kim played the ball into traffic in front of the goal as the loose ball bounced around and found the stick of Landry to put Swarthmore within one goal, 2-1.

- Both teams remained relatively quiet on the attack for the remainder of the third quarter. Swarthmore had a few chances early in the fourth before breaking through with the equalizer in the 56th minute. The Garnet generated traffic in front of the net once more before Kohn was able to maneuver the ball through bodies for the score, 2-2.

- Neither team was able to gain much traction early in the first overtime. The Garnet eventually captured momentum with a flurry of late scoring chances. Swarthmore had three consecutive quality looks on goal, but was unable to break through in the first overtime.

- The Garnet built on the momentum they created late in the first overtime as they started to exploit cracks in the Bulldogs' defense. Swarthmore entered the ball in front of the goal and Hitchingham was able to control the loose ball. The junior then carried the ball towards the top of the circle before turing around and firing the game-winning shot past the goalie, 3-2.
