Field Hockey Shuts Out Stevens on the Road

HOBOKEN, NJ - The Swarthmore College field hockey team took down a talented Stevens Institute of Technology, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon. The Ducks entered the game with a 3-1 record, which included a nationally-ranked victory over No. 18 Rochester University.

Deborah Kim tallied the game's only goal in the second minute of play. The Ducks outshot the Garnet 16-9, but Swarthmore was more efficient with a 5-3 shot on goal advantage. Swarthmore also overcame a significant disadvantage in corners as its defense held strong against the Ducks' attack.

Cassandra Conklin made three saves in the victory as she earned her second shutout of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet struck very early in the opening stanza with the game's first score in the second minute of action. After Sophia Hitchingham intercepted a Ducks' counter attack, Katherine Kohn played a beautiful backhanded centering pass to Kim, who delivered a strike past the goalie. Both teams were evenly matched with offensive opportunities as they each recorded four shots in the quarter.

- Swarthmore preserved an opening half shutout after facing six shots in the second stanza. However, none of the shots were on goal as Conklin made her only two stops of the opening half in the first stanza. The Garnet were held without a shot in the second, but held a one-goal advantage at intermission.

- Kohn fired a shot on goal early in the third quarter, but was unable to add to Swarthmore's lead. The Garnet then finished the stanza with a flurry of opportunities as Jackie Crowley and Hitchingham both recorded shots on goal. Crowley's attempt was stopped by the keeper, while Hitchingham's shot was stopped by a defensive save. The Ducks were held to one shot in the third quarter.

- Stevens controlled the majority of chances early in the fourth quarter. The Ducks had a couple attacks towards the net, but were unable to register a shot on goal early in the fourth. Conklin made a save late in the quarter to preserve the shutout, while Swarthmore kept possession late to expire the clock.
