SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's soccer team brought the offense in its season opener on Friday night, downing visiting Marywood University by a 6-1 score.
Lauren Lior dazzled in her collegiate debut, tallying two goals and one assist to lead the Garnet. Swarthmore netted three goals in each half and dominated the shot count, 32-5. The Garnet's six goals are the most they have scored in the first contest of the season since 1999 and they have now won three straight opening games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore got off to a fast start, totaling five shots in the first 11 minutes.
Ava Gizzie put the Garnet on the board with the fifth shot, finding open space in the box and converting at point-blank range. Swarthmore took a two-goal lead in the 18
th minute when Lior danced around a defender and got off a cross into the box.
Marea Lee booted in a bouncing ball for her first of the season.
Eloise Franz put the Garnet ahead by three in the 29
th minute when she found the back of the net off a corner kick.
- In the second half, the Pacers produced their lone goal with a penalty kick in the 48
th minute. However, Swarthmore continued to impose its will from that point, allowing just two shots the remainder of the game while amassing 18 on offense. Lior recorded back-to-back goals less than three minutes apart to make it a 5-1 game in the 67
th minute. Her first marker was a rocket from the top of the box while her second was into an empty net after beating the goalkeeper to a loose ball. Lior later had two chances at the hat trick but both shots were off target.
