Maze Hits Late Winner To Lead Women's Soccer Past Bridgewater

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Keren Maze scored the winning goal on a corner kick with 5:28 remaining to give the Swarthmore College women's soccer team a 3-2 victory over visiting Bridgewater College on Sunday afternoon.
 
Maze's heroics came after the Eagles evened the score with a penalty kick goal just three minutes prior. It was a thrilling conclusion to a contest that saw the first three tallies all within the opening 10 minutes. Lauren Lior and Ava Gizzie continued their hot starts to the season as both found the back of the net for a second straight game.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet did not need much time to get on the scoreboard as Lior blasted a shot into the cage just over three minutes in. It was the first-year forward's third goal of the young season. Marea Lee threw the ball in from the right side and it was deflected further to the middle by a Gizzie header. The ball rolled to the foot of Lior, who beat the goalkeeper to the left side.
 
- After three consecutive shots by Bridgewater, including one that glanced off the crossbar, Gizzie put Swarthmore ahead 2-0 in the seventh minute. Maze found Gizzie with a long service down the left side and Gizzie raced past a defender to put a shot into the left side of the net.
 
- The Eagles cut the deficit to one in the ninth minute with a corner kick goal that was sent directly in from the left side. Bridgewater nearly tied it in the second half on a rocket that clanged the upper right post in the 59th minute. The Eagles eventually potted the equalizer on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute.
 
- With the contest seemingly headed for a tie, the Garnet were awarded a corner kick with under six minutes to play. Maze took the chance from the right corner and sent the ball in looking for a teammate cutting to goal. However, the ball sailed over the mass of players and hooked just inside the far post for an unorthodox go-ahead marker. The Swarthmore defense then closed out the win by not allowing a shot during the closing minutes.
