Field Hockey Drops Opener to No. 15 Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team dropped their season opener to No. 15 Christopher Newport, 3-0, to open the 2023 campaign. The Garnet put up 16 shots while the Captains led the way with 22 shots.

The Garnet battled one of the nation's toughest opponents as they held them scoreless in the opening quarter. The Captains then scored one goal in each the second, third and fourth quarters to decide the game.

Cassandra Conklin recorded double-digit saves with 11 in a strong showing between the pipes. On the offensive side, Brooke Findlay paced the Garnet with four shots on goal on four attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore battled to an opening quarter draw to open play. Swarthmore had a flurry of opportunities early in the stanza, but couldn't connect. Findlay recorded consecutive shots on goal, which was shortly followed by shots from Magdelana Jordan and Abigail Fagersten. All four of the attempts were saved by the Captains' goalie, who tallied six saves in the quarter. The Garnet outshot their opponent 6-0 in the first.

- Conklin was tested early in the second quarter as she made three saves in the early minutes. The Captains then had another scoring attempt, which was denied by Sarah Cooper on a defensive save. The Garnet had a couple chances late in the half with shots on goal from Katherine Kohn and Jackie Crowley. However, Christopher Newport broke through first with a goal in the final minute of the half.

- Swarthmore's defense rose to the occasion early in the third with a couple more stops from Conklin. The Garnet were able to gain traction midway through the stanza with a couple shots on goal from Lauren Hardman and Anna Stancofski. Christopher Newport found the back of the cage once more with just over five minutes remaining in the stanza to take a two-goal advantage.

- The Garnet threatened early in the fourth quarter with a handful of shots on goal, but were unable to cut into their deficit. Christopher Newport then closed out the contest with an insurance goal in the final minutes of action, 3-0.
