COLLEGEVILLE, PA. - Shutting out the highest seeded squad in the Centennial Conference Playoffs, the No. 5 Swarthmore softball team took down No. 1 Ursinus College by a score of 3-0 on Thursday, Apr. 4.
Offensively, the Garnet were led by sophomore
Olivia McClammy, with the power-hitter putting up two hits and one run on three at bats.
From the mound, Swarthmore saw a masterclass performance from sophomore
Emily Bertrand. The righty tossed a full game, striking out one batter while allowing just two hits and no earned runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bertrand proved dominant from the mound through the first four innings, allowing just two base runners on a pair of walks.
- While Garnet bats were unable to match the team's defensive production through the first half of the game, Swarthmore caught fire in the top of the fifth. After outrunning an infield single to the shortstop, first year
Avery McClure advanced to second on a groundout from junior
Caterina Reed. On the very next at bat, the Missouri native crossed home for the Garnet's first run, being driven in by a single from fellow first year
Iris Barone. Barone herself scored when senior
Cassidy Cheong smacked another RBI single to left field, putting Swarthmore up 2-0.
- The Garnet extended their lead in the top of the sixth. After McClammy poked a single into center field and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from senior
Kate Hart, the shutout pitcher Bertrand proved her skills from the batter's box by torching a double to center field, bringing McClammy home and growing Swarthmore's advantage to 3-0.
- Bertrand's monumental performance continued through the second half of the contest, allowing just two hits while preserving the Garnet's 3-0 win over the top seed in the Centennial playoffs.
- With the victory, the Garnet improved to 22-16 on the season, in the process securing Head Coach
Melissa Finley's 100th win during her Swarthmore tenure.
