COLLEGEVILLE, PA. - Competing in their second game of the Centennial Conference Playoffs, the No. 5 seeded Swarthmore softball team took down No. 3 seed Washington College, defeating the Shorewomen by a score of 3-1 on Saturday, May 6.
Offensively, the Garnet were helmed by seniors
Cassidy Cheong and
Brooke Coneeny, with both players putting up two hits on three at bats while Cheong also tacked on an RBI to her stat line.
From the circle, Swarthmore saw excellent performances out of sophomores
Emily Bertrand and
Sarah Schab. Pitching in her second consecutive game, Bertrand took home the win with a line of eight hits, one earned run and three strikeouts over five innings. Schab stepped in in the sixth to close out the Garnet victory, allowing just one hit and zero earned runs while striking out three batters, notching her first save of the season in the process.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore's pitching proved lights out through the first two innings, with Bertrand allowing just two base runners on a single and a throwing error. The Shorewomen finally managed to get one past the Garnet's stout defense in the bottom of the third, taking a 1-0 lead.
- Not content with trailing for the first time in the playoffs, Swarthmore hit right back in the top of the fourth. After outrunning an infield single and advancing to third on an error, sophomore
Olivia McClammy came home off of the perfect sacrifice bunt from Bertrand, knotting the score up at 1-all.
- While both squads were held scoreless through the next two and a half innings, the Garnet struck again in the top of the sixth. Cementing her status as lethal on both sides of the ball, Bertrand rocketed a solo home run to left field, giving Swarthmore their first lead of the ballgame at 2-1.
- While Swarthmore extended their margin to 3-1 in the top of the seventh when a Cheong sacrifice fly brought in first year
Iris Barone, the run was just icing on the cake. Washington did not stand a chance against the Garnet's shutout pitching, managing just three base runners and one hit through the final two innings. As the last Shorewoman struck out looking in the bottom of the seventh, Swarthmore secured their 3-1 victory.
