Williams Earns All-American Status at NCAA Championships

Box Score ORLANDO - Swarthmore College women's tennis sophomore Nathalie Williams earned All-American status with an opening round victory at the NCAA Individual Championships on Friday.

Williams became the fourth individual in program history to earn All-American singles status. The sophomore is the first women's tennis student-athlete to accomplish the feat since Lia Carlson in 2012.

The Centennial Conference Player of the Year bested Washington University's Karen Gao, 6-4, 6-3, to open the morning with a first round victory. Williams jumped out to a 3-1 advantage in the first set, but dropped the next three games to surrender the lead. The sophomore then regrouped and rallied for three-straight wins to claim the first set. Williams carried momentum into the second set as she maintained the lead throughout and coasted to a 6-3 clinching victory.

Williams returned to action in the afternoon session as she battled top-seeded Olivia Soffer of Babson College in the second round. Williams fought hard against one of the nation's elite opponents, but suffered a 6-0, 6-1 defeat.
