ASTON, PA. - Competing in their final game of the 2023 regular season, the Swarthmore baseball team fell to Haverford College by a score of 10-5 on Monday, May 1.
Â
Offensively, the Garnet were helmed by the twin-headed attack of first year
Aidan Sullivan and sophomore
Benjamin Buchman, with Sullivan notching three hits and two RBIs, while Buchman put up a stat line of three hits, one run and one stolen base.
Â
From the mound, Swarthmore saw a stellar performance from the pair of junior
Jack Fitzgerald and sophomore
Andrew Moy, who combined to strike out five Haverford batters while holding the Fords to just two hits and one unearned run over the final four innings.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet struggled early, surrendering seven runs in the bottom of the first inning.
- Despite the setback, Swarthmore rebounded, getting on the board in top of the second. After singling to right field and stealing second, junior
Jett Shue was driven in by an RBI double from senior
Nate Jbara, narrowing the Garnet's deficit to 7-1.
- An excellent defensive play from Buchman kept the Fords scoreless in the second, with the catcher throwing out a runner trying to steal second for the Garnet's third out of the inning.
- After giving up two more runs in the bottom of the third, Swarthmore's bats came to life in the top of the fourth. Buchman, Jbara and senior
Joe Radek all stomped on home plate for the Garnet, increasing Swarthmore's run total to four.
- While both squads were held scoreless through the next two and a half innings, the Garnet finally broke through in the top of the seventh. Senior
Emmet Reynolds smacked a triple to right field, only to be brought in by senior Andrew Burgess on the very next at bat off of a sacrifice fly, further slicing into the Fords' advantage at 9-5.
- Unfortunately, Reynolds' run would prove the last for Swarthmore. Despite excellent pitching from Fitzgerald and Moy that held the Fords to just two hits and one run over the final four innings, Garnet bats could not match the production. Swarthmore's comeback came up short, as the Garnet ultimately fell by a score of 10-5.
- Swarthmore were not without their chances, as they had three excellent opportunities to further cut into Haverford's lead in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings. Buchman reached third twice on two multiple base hits, while Burgess advanced to the final bag following a walk, a wild pitch and pass ball. Unfortunately, the Garnet offense was unable to bring either home, leaving the runners stranded in prime scoring position.
- With the loss, the Garnet end their regular season with a record 20-17-1, 9-8-1 in conference.Â
