Baseball Falls Short of Comeback in Centennial Tournament Opener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team fell just short of completing a ninth-inning comeback as they lost to Haverford, 7-6, in the play-in round of the Centennial Conference Championship Tournament. Aidan Sullivan helped bring the Garnet back with a three-run homer in the ninth inning, but Swarthmore was unable to bring the tying run home.

Sullivan led the offense with four RBI, while providing a monstrous ninth-inning homer to bring Swarthmore within one run. Joe Radek was responsible for the team's other two runs with a two-run double in the fourth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet dug themselves into an early hole with a defensive miscue in the first inning, which allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate. Noah Potholm responded the next couple innings as he blanked the Fords offense to keep Swarthmore within striking distance, 2-0.

- Haverford added a run in the fourth inning to take a three-run advantage. Swarthmore would put together a rally in the bottom half of the frame to plate two runs across. Emmet Reynolds reached base with a one-out single, while Matthew Silvestre reached on a walk to put two runners on. After both runners advanced on a passed ball, Radek tallied the team's first runs with a two-out double to left field, 3-2.

- Swarthmore was unable to record a shutdown inning in the fifth as they allowed three unearned runs to touch home. The Fords rally was aided by two errors in the inning as the Garnet totaled four on the afternoon, 6-2.

- Alexander Rimerman was excellent for the Garnet as he posted two zeros out of the pen. The sophomore reliever kept Swarthmore in the game as he navigated through two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit.

- The Fords added an insurance run in the ninth inning to build a four-run cushion heading into the bottom of the stanza. Swarthmore stole a couple of baserunners to open the inning with an error and a hit batsman. Sullivan then capitalized on the Fords mistakes with a three-run shot to left field to pull the Garnet within one run. Swarthmore put a pair of baserunners on with two outs, but were unable to come through with one more big hit as Haverford shut the door on the Garnet's ninth-inning rally.
